Alexander won its first Section V title in school history
Section V vs. Section VI Football
State regional round
at New Era Field
Class D
Matchup and when: Alexander (10-0) vs. Maple Grove (10-0), 5 p.m.
State rankings: No. 5 Alexander Trojans, No. 1 Maple Grove Dragons.
Playbook: While this is Alexander’s first appearance in the state quarterfinals, the Dragons seem like regulars. Maple Grove has played in this game seven times, the last two as a merged team with Chautauqua Lake. The idea of being moved into Class C was unappealing so the merger ended. Maple Grove’s Curt Fischer, in his 26th season as a varsity coach, certainly has been here before. Bradley Benson, the team’s top running back, has more than 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving. Benson has scored 25 touchdowns. Running back Trevor Micek (six touchdowns) and receiver Nick Fabrizio (six) also hurt teams when defenses get overzealous trying to deal with Benson.
No Alexander team has won more games during a single season, so that and the team’s first sectional championship means this is a historical season for the Genesee Region league member. The Trojans, at least last week, seemed to be fun to watch, and a composed team with 15 seniors on a 29-player roster. They handled and controlled a Clyde-Savannah team with larger linemen and a flashy running back. “Most of these kids play sports, and they hold each other accountable,” Alexander coach Tim Sawyer said.
